Major legionella outbreak in Poland

The importance of regular testing of water-bearing systems for legionella is underlined by a major legionella outbreak in Poland last late summer.

In the city of Rzeszow in south-eastern Poland, over 150 people fell ill with legionellosis and 19 people died. All of the deceased had previous illnesses.

Laboratory tests of water samples from Rzeszow revealed legionella in the tap water. In order to eliminate the dangerous pathogens, the authorities introduced extensive water disinfection measures (chlorination, ozonisation and UV radiation).
