The problem
Safe and readily available drinking water is a top priority in every country, regardless of their development status. Even countries with highly developed infrastructure and networks are subjected to outbreaks of disease induced by waterborne pathogens such as Legionella and E. coli. Furthermore the Robert Koch Institute has reported the likelyhood of these outbreaks to increase due to the rising temperatures and erratic weather patterns caused by climate change. (Source: EN|DE)
When not properly checked and maintained, drinking water systems can provide suitable environments for the growth of these pathogens. By offering sections with little to no water flow, mild temperatures (25-45°C) and the presence of some residual nutrients, drinking water systems can provide an ideal environment for bacterial growth. This issue is made worse in the case of swimming pools or technical water systems such as cooling towers, due to the higher temperatures associated with these systems and the higher chance of pathogens entering the system. Who are some of these Pathogens?
Legionella
Legionella is responsible for legionnaires disease, which can lead to severe pneumonia and death
Legionella infects humans through inalation of contaminated aerossols
There is currently no vaccine against Legionella although some antibiotics work when the disease is diagnosed early (More Info.)
E. coli
E. coli is associated with severe cases of gastrointestinal disease and is an indicator of fecal matter contamination of the water supply
E. coli infects humans through the consumption of contaminated water
E. coli infections are usually treatable but can also lead to death (More Info.)
P. aeruginosa
P. aeruginosa can lead to multiple disease outcome ranging from dermatitis from contaminated water or pneumonia when in aerossol form
It is a leading cause for hosptial associated infections
Due to their prevalence in hospitals, P. aeruginosa is extremely resiliant against antibiotic treatments and is difficult to treat (More Info.)
Our solutions
At BlueLab, we believe that the best solution to ensure water safety is rapid, accurate and cost-effective water analysis solutions. We are developing different solutions to accomodate the broad range of use-cases that require microbial water analysis:
