Health authorities in Crete are currently urging locals and tourist hotspots such as hotels and resorts to employ mitigation strategies due to the staggering 50% of tested samples being positive for Legionella bacteria and a British tourist being hospitalized due to acquiring Legionnaires' disease.
Legionnaires' disease can be fatal, through the development of severe pneumonia, especially in high risk groups!
Prevention is key! Hotels, resorts, pools etc. have to test their water systems and employ proper prevention strategies such as correct boiler operating temperatures and system flushing!
What can you do?
Consider flushing showers and taps before use as bacteria tend to accumulate in stagnant water lines.
If you experience a persistent cough, fever or shortness of breath while on holiday or after returning home, seek immediate medical attention.
Holiday safety begins with hygiene and vigilance on the part of both operators and travelers.
